4.04: Can’t Stop This Thing We Started

It’s in the water, baby! We’re discussing One Tree Hill S4E4, “Can’t Stop This Thing We Started” aka the one where we learn that we have been gaslit into thinking Brooke (Sophia Bush) was pregnant when it was actually Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz)! It’s also when we get further confirmation that Derek (Matt Barr) has far from brotherly love for Peyton (Hilarie Burton Morgan); get introduced to Shelley (Elisabeth Harnois), the Clean Teens and some problematic anti-choice narratives; and DebRoe (Barbara Alyn Woods/Moira Kelly) continues to be on the outs. Also, Rachel (Danneel Ackles) poses for Maxim and we’re both feeling very bisexual about it (Don’t worry, we do unpack some of the problematic aspects from behind the scenes as well).

Friends, buckle your seatbelts and get ready for a One Tree Hill horror show because we are discussing S4E5: I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness! We unpack the Psycho Derek storyline and how effective of a horror show it still is, the real Derek surprise, and Jeremy considers if the episode would have been even stronger if the WHOLE episode had horror themes, similar to what Dawson’s Creek did. Kaitlyn shares her hot take that it’s unfair that Haley tells Nathan she’s pregnant at the same time he tells her that he got a scholarship from Duke. We both wonder why the heck Haley would then go to Dan to discuss the pregnancy and Duke news?! And we also discuss Rachel’s classy response to Nathan when he tells her that Haley is preggos (YAAS girl!), the dying art of email (lol), and the Nick teacher surprise (ew). 4.06: Where Did You Sleep Last Night?

We are coming in hot with the hot takes in our discussion of S4E6: Where Did You Sleep Last Night? First, we wonder where the heck all of Peyton’s friends are after the traumatic event in the previous episode and why therapy isn’t a critical aspect of this storyline (yes, we are a broken record!). We call out the real Derek for needing to have more empathy for Peyton, but appreciate the twist at the end with Derek secretly watching out for her. We also unpack the cringiness of the Brooke and Mr. Chavez storyline, wonder how Haley and Nathan actually exist on just one cafe job, and seriously question if people care THAT much about *high school* basketball that they actually bet on it?! And finally, Kaitlyn calls out Karen (gasp!) for her crappy advice to Haley that lacks any practical tips and furthers the anti-choice narrative already present in this season.

Join us for a rather loopy episode of Always and Forever (we apologize!) where we discuss ALL the icky storylines in S4E7: All These Things That I’ve Done! We continue our conversations that we’ve had all season so far…Peyton is traumatized and desperately needs therapy or support from her MIA dad, loan sharks should not take advantage of teenagers, and the fact that Mr. Chavez is a predator, but the show refuses to address it. We may be a little unhinged in this episode on S4E8: Nothing Left to Say but Goodbye, but there is so much to unpack! We discuss if calculus is really a requirement in high school, our conflicted feelings about Dan and Karen finally making amends after all these years, and the growing divide between Brooke and Peyton, including the directing choices used with their characters in this episode. Kaitlyn shares that she’s officially over the love triangle between Lucas, Brooke, and Peyton, BUT Brooke wanting a second chance with Lucas is actually a realistic situation after a break up. Jeremy points out that Peyton has changed in how she deals with adversity. And finally, GIVE BARRY CORBIN MORE WORK! Whitey’s banquet speech gave us ALL the feels.

Folks, we’ve FINALLY made it to S4E9: Some You Give Away, aka the State Championship episode! We discuss Lucas’ reaction to Peyton’s confession and the extra line that was added to the scene, Brooke actually failing calculus instead of Rachel, all the campy cheerleader scenes, and our two different views about Karen taking Deb to rehab. Kaitlyn likes the episode’s structure and overall message, but Jeremy questions all the plot holes and whether another character would have worked better in Lucas’ role.
